Jian Zhan Tea Cup

Jianzhan originated from the Jian Kiln in Jianyang, Fujian Province, during the Song Dynasty in China. The craftsmanship of Jianzhan is highly advanced, involving different types of clay and minerals. The firing process results in stunning patterns and glazes, known as “yaobian” (曜变), making Jianzhan a highly representative and distinctive type of teaware.

Jianzhan vs Tenmoku

Tenmoku is the Japanese term for early Jianzhan. During the Song Dynasty, many Japanese monks traveled to the temples in Tianmu Mountain, Zhejiang Province. When these monks returned to Japan, they brought back tea rituals, ceremonies, and teaware, including the black-glazed tea bowls from the temples. These bowls, brought back from Tianmu Mountain, were referred to as Tenmoku.
